Urban Chestnut Brewing Company was the only other brewery stop I made while in St. Louis, and it was definitely the biggest of the three. I visited their Grove location, which is more of a full bierhall than a small brewery taproom. The company itself was founded with a focus on blending traditional European brewing styles with modern craft techniques, which you definitely see reflected in both in their beer lineup and the vibe of the space.

Taproom

When I stopped in, it was later on a Thursday night and getting close to closing, so the place was pretty quiet. Because of that, it was hard to fully gauge what the energy would be like during peak hours. That said, the size of the place makes it easy to imagine how different it would feel on a busy night. This is clearly a place built for crowds.

What's On Tap?

Beer taps

The bartender was telling me that Urban Chestnut likes to lean toward classic, clean beer styles, especially those inspired by European traditions. But thankfully, for me, they had a sour option on tap:

The drink menu

Ku’damm – Berliner Weisse 4.2% ABV

This was a nice, basic sour - light, tart, and refreshing - nothing super complex. It had a crisp, clean finish you’d expect from a Berliner Weisse, so it was easy to drink, especially if you’re just wanting something refreshing rather than heavily fruited or intense.

Food Finds

Urban Chestnut has food on site, a pizza concept called Fordo’s Killer Pizza located right inside the brewery. Unfortunately, it was already closed by the time I got there - but it definitely looked good from seeing what others had ordered.

Given the size of the space and the setup, it seems like the kind of place where food and beer go hand-in-hand when things are fully open.

The Vibe Inside & Out

Social area - pool tables and tv

The Grove location is huge.

There’s a ton of space both inside and outside, with large seating areas, big TVs , and even a section with pool tables. It’s clearly designed to handle a big crowd and looks like it would be a great spot to spend a few hours with a group!

Even though it was quiet when I visited, you could tell the potential was there. On a nice summer evening, this feels like the kind of place that would be packed and buzzing with energy.

If I had been there with friends, it’s definitely somewhere I could’ve pulled out a game and stayed for a while.

  • Great for groups. This is one of the better setups for larger groups or extended hangouts.

To-Go selection

Urban Chestnut’s Grove location is built to be a large, social brewery experience.

Even though my visit was quick and on the quieter side, it’s easy to see how this place would come alive with a crowd. And I loved the atmosphere on a slow evening as well. Between the layout, classic beer, and on-site food, it’s a great spot to spend an evening in St. Louis - especially if you’re with a group.

Next time I’m in the area, I’d definitely like to check out their Midtown location as well to see how the vibe compares.
