It’s located just a few minutes from downtown in the Kings Oak neighborhood close to Forest Park, so it’s an easy detour if you’re checking out the city or are staying nearby. It’s not a huge brewery, but it has a cozy feel that makes it a nice place to settle in for a bit and it would be great to sit on the patio on a nice night.

Modern Brewery opened in 2014, and was started with an idea of blending Belgian and American brewing influences into a kind of “beer fusion.” Since then, it’s grown into a popular neighborhood spot that offers not only craft beer but also a full food menu and bar.

When I stopped in on a Thursday evening, the place already had a solid crowd. The bar seats were completely full, and several tables had groups playing games or relaxing with a drink. Even though I was there solo, it still felt like a comfortable place to hang out for a while and enjoy a drink.

What's On Tap?

One thing that stood out here compared to a lot of breweries is that they also offer a full bar, along with wine and cocktails, so it’s a great option if you’re visiting with a group where not everyone is focused on craft beer. The craft brew menu covers everything from ales to lighter drinkers, some fun experimental flavors and a sour.

Draft menu

Disco Punch – Raspberry / Blackberry Kettle Sour 5% ABV

This sour had a nice balance of tartness and berry flavor. The raspberry and blackberry come through right, giving it a juicy character without being too sweet as some berry-forward sours can be. I would've loved to order a second had I not been there on my own!

Food Finds

Modern Brewery is not just a brewery - it’s a full restaurant and bar as well with The King Oak, right inside. Their food menu has options like:

  • whole or by-the-slice pizza (AMAZING by the way)

  • burgers and sandwiches

  • salads

  • soups and apps

The kitchen menu has enough options that even someone who isn’t primarily there for the beer would still find something tasty to eat.

The atmosphere inside Modern Brewery was lively and social. The space has a relaxed, warm lighting that encourages people to stay awhile, whether that means grabbing a seat at the bar or sitting down with the family for a full meal.

Even though I was there on my own, it still felt like a comfortable place to hang out. Groups nearby were playing games and enjoying drinks, which gave the taproom a fun and energetic vibe. For a Thursday evening, the place had a great crowd.

To-Go selection

Modern Brewery is a great example of how a brewery can be more than just a place to grab a quick beer. Between the creative drink lineup, excellent pizza, lively atmosphere, and strong food menu, it’s an easy place to spend an evening in St. Louis. Even though I stopped in solo, it turned out to be one of the more enjoyable brewery visits of the trip.
