There’s a story behind Firetrucker Brewing that makes it instantly one worth visiting - it’s located in the old Ankeny fire station, and you can feel the history the second you open the door. From the brick walls to the exposed beams, the space still has the bones of its life as a firehouse. For someone like me, with a son who’s a firefighter, it’s extra special - breweries in old fire stations have a character that other buildings just can’t match.
The name “Firetrucker” itself is a tip of the hat to their heritage, celebrating the people who once ran the trucks and now inspire the overall vibe of the taproom. It’s definitely a place where small-town meets craft beer, even if the crowd doesn’t always show up on a Saturday night.
What's On Tap?

During my visit, I tried Infusion - Gooseberry Fields Forever, a 4.7% ABV blend of their state fair infusion with strawberry. It had a nice tartness and was an easy sipper, perfect for someone who enjoys a light, fruit-forward beer.
For those not in the mood for beer, Firetrucker offers a few alternatives. On tap you can find ciders and seasonal specials, along with lighter options like seltzers. Perfect for someone who is trying to pace themselves, isn't a fan of hops, or looking for something a little different while still enjoying the firehouse vibe.
Drink Score: 2.5/5

Food Finds
There’s no kitchen on-site, but the location makes it easy to grab food from nearby and enjoy it in the taproom or on the patio. From sandwiches to quick bites, you won’t go hungry, it just requires some planning ahead.

Food Score: 0/5

The Vibe Inside & Out
Inside, Firetrucker is cozy, quirky, and full of personality. The lounge area is spacious with plenty of seating, and the patio is a great option in warmer months. It shines during events, which include:
Live Music Fridays (7–9 PM)
Music BINGO Wednesdays (7 PM)
Trivia Thursdays (7 PM)
Even if it’s quiet when you visit, the history and design make it a memorable stop — and you can tell the community comes alive when the events roll around.
Vibe Score: 4/5

Dog Friendly Details:
Dogs are welcome on the patio, which is fantastic in the spring and summer. In colder months, though, indoor access would be nice, as it’s Iowa…no one wants to sit on the patio in December!
Score: 0/5

Tapped In Takeaway

Firetrucker Brewing is a small-town gem that wins on both charm and personality. From the history of the building to the interesting beer options, it’s a spot worth stopping at when you’re passing through on your way to Des Moines. For anyone who loves breweries with character, a tribute to local history, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, Firetrucker is an easy recommendation. Next time, I’ll be back to try more of their rotating taps and enjoy the patio when the weather’s right.
