If you’re exploring the Sioux Falls brewery scene, Severance Brewing Company is the perfect balance of creativity, bigger small-town vibes, and energy that you can feel when you walk in the door. The brewery’s mission is to “sever ties from the norm” both in life and in drink, to them it isn’t just marketing; they show it in their beer lineup and their taproom atmosphere.
What's On Tap?

While it’s hardly the only brewery doing sours, Severance’s options gave me a nice range of options to explore. Kudos to them for having a bunch of options:
Ambidexterus Hitchhiker - Berry Blend
A classic sour berry mix of blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry. Nothing super unique, but balanced and delightful- a solid option.
3.5 / 5

Re-Berried Inhibitions - Marionberry Punch
My favorite of the three options. More flavor and an extra tart twist from the marionberry made this one more my style and worth a second sample. Nice balance without being too much.
3 / 5
SEUW Brew - Dragon Fruit / Passion Fruit / Mango
A tropical combo that fell flat for me. The idea is great, but I wanted more tartness and flavor.
2/ 5

Severance rotates beer styles regularly, so your options might be different - but if sours are your thing (like mine), they usually have something fun to pick from.
Food Finds
One of the things I liked about Severance is how they partner with local businesses for food options without having a full kitchen of their own. They have ties with The Lodge Bar & Grill at Jacobson Plaza, you can order from their full menu through their QR code at the bar - smash burgers, soups, salads, and lots more.
They also serve pizza from Sunny’s Pizzeria that has options like Bacon Cheeseburglar, Three Little Pigs Went to Severance, and Jalapeño Popper. Snacks and packaged treats are also available if you want something light.
Not into those options? Outside food is allowed, too, so this is a great place to bring in your own food to enjoy with your pint. Whether you're wanting a Chipotle burrito bowl or just grazing on some SkinnyPop as you sip, bring whatever you'd like.
Food Score: 3.5/5
The Vibe Inside & Out
Severance isn’t just about the drinks and food - they really appreciate their community. There’s plenty of room for conversation, board games, and just fun times, and they’ve even got kid-friendly touches like kid packs (juice & crackers), changing stations, and snacks for younger visitors- if you're into that...which I tend to try and steer clear of...sorry, been there, done that. My brewery days are meant to be kid free.
They also have a number of programs that give back to the community, like their Pints for People and monthly Give Back Tap Events, where they give proceeds to local nonprofits.
All of this, from unique beers, local partnerships, community, and open-door friendliness makes Severance feel less like a “stop in” and much more like a favorite neighborhood hangout.
Vibe Score: 4/5

Dog Friendly Details:
Severance continues its friendly vibe by welcoming dogs both inside and on the patio. Bowls and treats are ready, and the space feels especially relaxed when furry friends are part of the scene. I have to say, my favorite part of my whole visit was seeing a couple of pups bellied up to the bar.
Score: 5/5
