Front of Walter Station
A must-visit in Phoenix, AZ

Walter Station came highly recommended by some fellow brewery lovers we met while visiting another location in the Phoenix area. They said it had a cool, unique vibe—and they were right. Housed in a repurposed 1960s fire station, this building has a firehouse feel and a fun atmosphere. The neighborhood might be a bit “sketchy” (according to my compadres), the brewery is a hidden gem and totally worth the visit. For me, this place was a bit more meaningful, as my son is currently training to be a firefighter. Enjoying a tasty cold pint in a former firehouse felt like a nod to his training and dedication.

Another nice perk about this place is that it's just minutes away from Sky Harbor Airport. So, if you're on your way to catch a flight or just arriving, it's easy to get to and not far away!

Drinks:

The day I visited they were pouring Prickly Pear Sour, a Gose Wheat Ale that is part of their “seasonal sour series”. I loved it.They rotate this with another couple of flavors, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect.

According to the bartender, they use over 100 pounds of prickly pear to make this one, so the fruit flavor is 100% natural. It’s got a great level of tartness to it as well as the fruit flavor from the prickly pear and an odd touch of salt, which makes this perfectly balanced.

This one gets a 4 out of 5, it was rather enjoyable! I would've considered grabbing a pack to bring home if I wouldn't have had to lug it onto an airplane to do so!

Food:

We didn’t stick around long enough to eat (3 teenagers get impatient when mom’s on a brewery mission), but I was impressed by the size of the menu. Pizza, sandwiches, salads and great app choices make this a great option for happy hour, after a round of golf, or following a hike in the Arizona sun.

I'll give them a 4 out of 5 in this category, they had a decent selection of options, which is kind of rare!

Dog Friendliness:

No furry friends this time at Walter Station, but multiple dog bowls throughout the place were a pretty good indication that they are welcome here.

They deserve at least a 3 out of 5 here, it's pretty clear that many 4 legged friends visit often but unfortunately in their absence I can't go any higher. Next time I'll adjust the rating if appropriate.

Atmosphere:

This place was fun and unique. With the brick walls, sections of old-school firehouse gear and big garage doors that open to the patio, it was a great place to hang out. With an outdoor stage and lots of space on their patio, I’d love to come back and listen to live music next time.

This definitely deserves a 4.5/5 simply for it's unique-factor. Guarantee you won't find another like it.

Merch & More:

Decent selection of branded merch. Of course I had to snag one of the firefighter-themed shirts for my son, and I may have gotten one for myself, too. There were a number of apparel options to choose from as well as their pint glasses, which I may have at my bar downstairs now as well! I'll go with a 3 out of 5 for their variety!

Aside from the merch, there’s a lot happening here. They host Bingo on Tuesdays, trivia Wednesdays and live music Friday and Saturday! Happy hour is from 3-6 every day, and all day on Thursday! Considering they’re closed on Mondays, you’re bound to find something entertaining, no matter when you go!

Overall:

I loved it. Walter Station is one of those places that leaves an impression—not just for the drinks, but for the story behind it and the unique setting. It’s fun, it’s one of a kind, and it stays true to its roots. I’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in Arizona. The best thing about visiting different breweries is discovering what makes them unique. This one was definitely that, if you’re in the Phoenix area and are looking for a place to grab a drink, that’s not your usual bar and grill, put Walter Station at the top of your list!

I was tempted to go 5/5 on this, just because of how different it is, but we'll stick with 4 for now. Hopefully I can get back there and check out their live music and see some furry friends, then I can justify the 5/5!

Update:

Since our visit, Walter Station has officially closed its taproom as of the end of April 2025. While it's sad to see a great space go, they did mention that their team is shifting gears so they can focus on expanding the brand's beer distribution throughout Arizona. So even though you can’t stop in for a pint anymore and the cool atmosphere, you can still find their brews like Hazing Arizona, Baja Girl, and Turnout IPA at stores, bars, and restaurants around AZ. Good luck to Walter Station on their new venture—cheers to good beer and good people.
