New Magnolia Brewing was one of the stops we made while traveling to Houston for a rescue dog transport trip. By the time we arrived, it was clear the brewery already had a lively crowd gathering. Several groups were settling in around the taproom, and there was even a comedian getting ready to start a show on the patio, which gave the whole place a fun, social energy.

The brewery itself sits in Houston’s Heights neighborhood and was founded with the goal of creating a community-focused brewery built around classic brewing techniques and high-quality ingredients. Over time it’s become a popular gathering spot for locals looking for good beer and a relaxed place to spend an evening. Even on a weekday, the space felt active and welcoming.

What's On Tap?

Taplist

New Magnolia brews a wide range of craft beers on site: lagers, IPAs, dark styles, and seasonal releases. Their tap list changes frequently, so there’s usually something new to try each visit.

They did have a sour on tap when we stopped in, which of course caught my attention during my ongoing search for good sour beers. Unfortunately, I forgot to write down the exact details of the one I tried - and with several sour options rotating through their lineup, I can’t confidently say which one it was.

That said, the brewery clearly enjoys experimenting with different styles, so sour fans will likely find something worth trying when visiting.

Food Finds

New Magnolia Brewing focuses primarily on the beer experience, but they often host food trucks to keep visitors fueled while enjoying a pint or two.

Given the brewery’s location in the Heights area, there are nearby dining options if you’re planning to spend more time exploring the neighborhood.

The Vibe Inside & Out

The atmosphere at New Magnolia was easily one of the memorable parts of the visit. The taproom offers a variety of seating options, which makes the space feel welcoming whether you’re visiting with a group or just stopping in for a quick drink. There are traditional bar-height tables, bar seating , and even an area with comfortable, cozy lounge-style seating.

Outside, the patio is another great space to hang out, and it’s where the comedy show was setting up during our visit. What really made the brewery stand out, though, were a couple of fun touches. There was a puzzle table set up inside, inviting people to stop and work on it while enjoying their beer. Even more unique was the brewery’s indoor feather bowling lane, which adds a fun activity that you don’t see in many taprooms.

Those little details made the place feel like a social gathering space not just a spot to grab a drink.

Between the welcoming atmosphere, the feather bowling and a puzzle table, and a tap list that rotates, it’s a fun place to spend an evening in Houston.

Even though I can’t remember exactly which sour I tried, the overall experience made this a memorable stop during our trip.
