12 West Brewing ended up being one of those stops where our Minnesota time zone habits made us look like the most eager customers of the day. Because we’re used to being an hour ahead, we arrived right when the doors opened, and pretty sure we were the first people through the door that afternoon. That did make things a little weird at first, but it also gave us the chance to explore the space. - the highlight was easily the upstairs outdoor patio.

The rooftop seating overlooks the main street in Downtown Mesa, and on a beautiful Arizona day it’s an incredible place to sit with a beer. They had game options out there as well - bags, darts, etc. Honestly, I could have stayed up there all afternoon if it hadn’t felt a little awkward being the only people around for a while.

12 West Brewing started in Gilbert, where the founders set out to create a brewery focused on community, creativity, and quality craft beer. Over time they expanded to include this Downtown Mesa location, which adds a great stop to the area’s already amazing brewery scene.

Maybe we'll make it to the original location in Gilbert, it's something I will definitely add to the list

What's On Tap?

Taplist

12 West keeps a rotating selection of house beers on tap, including IPAs, lagers, and seasonal releases.

As usual, my attention was focused on the sour options.

  • Pupsicle - Kettle Sour 4% ABV

This one immediately caught my attention just from the name alone. As someone who spends a lot of time around rescue dogs, anything with a dog-themed name is going to grab me. Thankfully it was also a decent sour with a good amount of tartness and very drinkable.

  • Imaginary Penguin: Oops All Berries – Kettle Sour 6% ABV

This was another great sour option on the tap list. It was a bit more fruit-forward and "thicker" with berry flavors but still had a clean sour finish.

Food Finds

The Mesa location focuses on the beer and the experience, with nearby restaurants and food options throughout Downtown Mesa if you’re looking for a bite to eat during your brewery tour. Given how many places are within walking distance, it’s easy to grab food somewhere nearby and continue the hopping.

The Vibe Inside & Out

The taproom has a modern brewery feel with plenty of space inside, but the upstairs patio is really the star of the show.

Looking out over Main Street from the rooftop gives the brewery a great vantage point, especially when the weather is nice. It’s easy to imagine the space filling up later in the day with groups enjoying the Arizona sunshine.

Even though it was quiet, the setup makes it clear this place can easily turn into a lively hangout spot once the crowds arrive.

Dog Friendly Details:

Honestly, I'm not sure what the dog-friendly status is here. I'm sure they're welcome on the outdoor patio, but not sure about upstairs or inside. I didn't see any clear signage and it wasn't mentioned on their website.

Insider Info

  • Don’t skip the rooftop patio. It’s easily the best spot in the building.

  • Arrive later if you want a crowd. Early visits can be quiet, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

  • Good stop for a brewery crawl. 12 West is right in Downtown Mesa where several other breweries are within walking distance.

Patio

12 West Brewing in Mesa offers a fun combination of creative beers and a great rooftop patio. Even though we arrived early and had the place mostly to ourselves for a bit, the space (especially the upstairs patio) makes it easy to see why it’s a popular stop in Downtown Mesa .
