Swing Barrel Brewing is a smaller, local breweries that leans into being a true neighborhood spot.
Located in Moorhead, just across the river from Fargo, the brewery was started by a group of friends with a passion for craft beer and a desire to build something community-focused. (Have you noticed the theme). From the start, the goal was to create a place where people could gather, relax, and feel like regulars - even on their first visit.

And honestly, that’s exactly the vibe you get when you walk in. It’s not a large space, but that’s part of the appeal. The taproom has a cozy, familiar feel - the kind of place that reminds you of a “Cheers”-style bar where everybody knows your name.
What's On Tap?
As with most, Swing Barrel keeps a rotating lineup of house beers on tap, a mix of styles that change regularly.

The sour on draft when I visited was:
Zoltar - Fruited Sour Mango, Peach & Coconut Cream | 5.75% ABV
This one definitely was all-in on the tropical side with the mango and peach, but the coconut cream gave it a heavier, smoother profile than I typically go for.

For me personally, it wasn’t a favorite - and I think that mostly comes down to the coconut cream not really being my thing. That said, if you enjoy creamier, dessert-y sours, this might be right up your alley.
As with most smaller breweries, the tap list rotates, so check what’s currently available before you stop in.

Food Finds
Swing Barrel is there for the beer experience, so food options are limited within the taproom itself.
Depending on the day, you may find snacks or nearby food options, but this is more of a place to grab a drink and hang out rather than settle in for a full meal. During the warmer months, they often have a food truck parked outside as well!

The Vibe Inside & Out
The taproom is intimate and laid-back, which makes it feel more personal than some of the larger brewery spaces.
Because of the smaller size, it’s easy to see how this becomes a hangout for locals. Conversations carry across the room, people seem to know each other, and it creates a welcoming, familiar energy that’s sometimes harder to find at bigger breweries.
It’s the kind of place where you stop in for one drink and end up staying longer than planned.
Vibe Score: 3.5/5

Dog Friendly Details:
Check with the brewery directly for current dog policies, as indoor space is limited. We didn't see any pups when we were there, and I couldn't find their policy on their website either!

Tapped In Takeaway

Swing Barrel Brewing is a great example of a small-town craft brewery atmosphere done right.
Between the welcoming feel, changing beer selection, and strong sense of community, it’s a place that feels comfortable from the moment you walk in. Even though the sour I tried wasn’t quite my style, the overall experience made it a decent stop.
Final Score: 2.5/5
