Walking Stick Brewing is one of those places that just feels good to come back to.

We’ve actually stopped here twice now on trips down to Texas while transporting rescue dogs for Ruff Start Rescue. Both visits had the same calm, welcoming atmosphere that makes it an easy place to relax for a bit after a long day of driving.

The brewery is located in Houston’s Garden Oaks neighborhood just north of the 610 loop, and it has a true neighborhood hangout feel rather than a flashy brewery feel.

Walking Stick was founded a couple who transformed an industrial property into a brewery and beer garden. The wife grew up in Houston, and the husband in Colorado. You'll definitely notice and feel the influences of both! The space itself also has an interesting history as it was originally a metal building used for cleaning tents and parachutes before it was a welding shop for the more recent years. The owners wanted to preserve that industrial character, turning it into a bright, airy space with high ceilings and big windows.

It’s a fun mix of industrial and mountain inspiration.

What's On Tap?

Food

The beer lineup at Walking Stick has a clear influence from the owners’ time in the UK and Colorado mountains. The brewery focuses on traditional styles, easy drinkers, and hoppy beers, many named after Colorado “14er” mountains.

Sour

They've had a couple of Berliner Weisse options on tap when we've visited. Both worth a second round. Their tap list rotates often, as most do, but it's a place we'll keep coming back to, as it never disappoints.

Food Finds

A common setup that works well in the brewery scene...food trucks! Grab a pint inside and then pick up food from whatever truck happens to be there.

The Vibe Inside & Out

The atmosphere is one of the best things about Walking Stick.

The brewery has two beer gardens at the taproom, giving you plenty of outdoor space to spread out.

Inside you’ll find a cozy taproom with a laid-back vibe, while outside there’s plenty of seating for groups and families. It’s definitely a community gathering spot rather than a high-energy party spot.

The brewery also hosts events throughout the year, adding to that neighborhood hangout feel.

Dog Friendly Details:

Yes! Walking Stick is very welcoming to dogs. They even have water stations with bowls, treats, and poo bags available in the beer garden areas for pups.

Given that we were traveling with rescue dogs, that kind of environment made the stop even better.
