Tucked in the heart of the charming mountain town of Idaho Springs, Tommyknocker Brewery was one of our first stops on our Colorado brewery tour, and definitely set the bar high. Whether you’re on your way to Silverthorne or just looking for a laid-back place to enjoy good beer and good food, Tommyknocker delivers for sure.
This brewery was started back in the 1990s and has deep roots in Colorado’s craft beer scene. Fun fact I learned is that they even use Rocky Mountain snowmelt and local ingredients whenever possible. And if you’re wondering about the name - it comes from the Tommyknocker, a mischievous mining spirit believed to haunt the tunnels of Colorado’s gold rush era. That touch of history, mixed with the small-town charm, makes this a true Colorado classic stop.
WHAT'S ON TAP?

While Tommyknocker is known mostly for its traditional beers, I was pleasantly surprised by their “Peach Dream” Sour. It was light, just a little bit tart, and refreshing, which made it perfect for a hot, rainy mountain day. It was so good that I ordered a second.

Their beer options cater to all, with a variety of IPAs, lagers, porters, and seasonal releases. You can tell this brewery has had lots of time to perfect its lineup over the years.
Sour Score: 3/5
FOOD FINDS

We didn’t stay for a full meal, but a couple of appetizers gave us a taste of what Tommyknocker has to offer. Lots of comfort food classics like elk burgers, chili mac & cheese, fried pickles, and sweet potato tots. The menu variety pairs perfectly with a pint.
Based on what we had, and the plates we saw coming out of the kitchen, I’ll be back for a full meal next time.
Food Score: 3/5
THE VIBE INSIDE & OUT

Tommyknocker has a cozy, mountain-saloon mixed with a lodge feel that fits the quaint little town of Idaho Springs perfectly. The wood floors creak, the lights are warm, and the crowd is a mix of locals and travelers. Inside, there’s plenty of seating for groups or solo visitors, and the vibe is relaxed but still lively.
Outside, the patio offers a front-row view of downtown Idaho Springs and the surrounding mountains. It’s easy to lose track of time here, soaking up the small-town charm.
Vibe Score: 4/5

DOG FRIENDLY DETAILS:
No dogs were spotted inside (it’s a full-service restaurant), but their outdoor street patio is very dog-friendly. They even have water bowls and a kiddie pool to help pups cool off on hot summer days. It was a fun and thoughtful touch that fits the Colorado dog-friendly nature.
Score: 2/5
