BlackStack sits in the industrial area of St. Paul, sharing a historic building with Can Can Wonderland, making it a perfect date-night or weekend hangout location. The building was once a canning factory built in 1889, the big smokestack towering over the Midway-Hamline neighborhood is hard to miss. The brewery came to be in 2013 saving the building from demolition and bringing it to life as one of the most popular brewery destinations in the area.
It’s 20,000 square feet, so you’re bound to find a place to chill. Filled with live greenery throughout, cozy lounge areas with sofas, comfy chairs and some more traditional table options as well. If you’re sipping a pint with friends, playing a couple games, or just sitting with your laptop on a weekday afternoon. BlackStack has that perfect mix of energy and relaxation, a place that feels big but still feels like home.
What's On Tap?

This visit had a mission: to track down their Uncut Jams, a strawberry-rhubarb fruit beer that I had at a local bar. I needed to have some in my home fridge. At 5.3% ABV, it’s tart and balanced, the rhubarb adds a tang that makes it different from the typical sours you find. This one is easily in my Top 5 sours of all time.
In addition to the sour, BlackStack has over 24 taps pouring options like IPAs, Dark Lager, Pilsner, Pale Ales, Seltzers, Lagers and THC Seltzer - just to mention a few. For the non-drinkers or DDs, there’s a decent selection of sodas, juice boxes, and chocolate milk for the kids.

Food Finds
Another brewery with a solid food truck lineup. Something different daily so you’re bound to find something you like - just be sure to check out the calendar to plan ahead! The Brick Oven Bus was parked out front during our visit, tasty quick fired pizza, that had a perfectly chewy crust and fresh ingredients. Super good.

If pizza’s on your menu too often, check their food truck calendar before you go, they’ve got options from tacos to BBQ to gourmet sliders.
Food Score: 3.5/5

The Vibe Inside & Out
BlackStack is HUGE. With its high ceilings, open floor plan, and different sections of comfortable seating, it’s easy to carve out your own space. Grab one of the hundreds of board games, find a chair next to the giant TV for the Vikings game, or just chill with a flight and good conversation.
They host regular events that keep things fun:
Kolsch Night Mondays from 4-10
Taproom Trivia Wednesdays at 7 pm
Some seasonal events like Bingo, book fairs, pumpkin carving
There is a lot happening around here - don’t miss out! If you’re looking for a place to host an event, they’ve got a dedicated space for 40-100 people.
Vibe Score: 4.5/5

Dog Friendly Details:
Unfortunately the city of St. Paul apparently doesn’t allow dogs in taprooms like BlackStack where they have open production. So, they’re welcome on the small patio area out front.
Score: 0/5

Best time to visit: The sheer size of the taproom means there’s usually a seat waiting for you, but for game days or special events, I’d recommend you arrive early to claim the best spots.

Make it a date: Don't miss your chance to check out Can-Can Wonderland while you're there

If you want the big taproom experience without heading downtown, BlackStack is the perfect option. With a great list of tap options, fun, welcoming brewery atmosphere it’s a great place to hang out or visit before before or after a round of mini golf at Can Can Wonderland!
